Calder Canoe Centre uses a superb purpose built training facilities at Clitheroe Canoe
Club with classroom and changing rooms and kitchen and good parking on site.
This facility is safe and ideal for beginers and up to Level 1/2 coaching courses
as well as many other courses like first aid which are also run from the centre.
A purpose built lake is also on site which offers the ideal training venue for all
manor of courses.
A couple of us decided to do our bcu 2 star training and assessment courses
This is how we got on
On
arriving at the centre as usual for us it started to snow we were greeted by the superb purpose build building and the coaches
for the day then taken to the kitchens for a welcome hot drink
At
the start of the course we were then taken to the classroom where we were briefed on what the course entailed for us and what
was expected of us as candidates for the course as well as a safety briefing we were then taken to the changing rooms to get
in to our kit .
All our clothing and
safety equipment was then inspected and checked by our instructor for the day Martin Hartley who then explained a few things
about the lake we would be using during the course.
We
would be using a variety of craft during the day which included sit on top kayaks sit inside kayaks and Canadian open canoes
martin done a fantastic job of explaining and coaching us in using all 3 types of craft
We were taught many new
things on all 3 types of craft including safety and rescue both assisted and solo on all 3 craft during the re-entry drills
we had 2 bcu coaches showing us the way forward Martin Hartley and Andy Noblett one in the water and 1 on the bank this made
it very easy to learn the drills safely
We were then taken
back to the classroom to discus what we had learned and how the new techniques we had learned could be used in our particular
sport of kayak fishing
We were then individually
assessed by the coaches and assessors and given helpful advice on what we had learned we both passed our 2 star bcu awards.
We had a great day
and learned so much we liked the style of teaching we received from the coaches who we found extremely professional friendly
and very helpful during the day .
I would fully recommend
Calder canoe centre and all the coaches to anybody wishing to try a course for themselves.
Next up for us will
be the fsrt and level 1 instructor courses which are now booked .
