I bought several packs of Lincolnshire peeler crab
from ebay When they arrive they are packaged in cellophane with individual baits separated. I had some difficulty in
opening the baits they seam a bit soft they have the consistency of peanut butter but after taking advice from the seller
I tried his ideas for using the bait I was advised to leave the baits in the fridge for 24 hours before I used them this should
give time to form a skin on the baits and make handling and hooking easier
As you can see the bait moulds quite easily to the hook the photo below
is of a 4/0 hook and 1 large cod size bait ? I used this hook size just for illustration hooking is quite easy just push the
hook through the bait and gauze twice
I then suspended the bait in a glass for 30 mins to
see what the decay rate would be but bear in mind if you were in the sea you would have factors such as tide which would make
a difference after 30 mins I gave the hook line a little shake and I was left with just a piece of gauze so realistically
you would need to change your bait about every 15/20 mins
My conclusion without using it at sea yet is the idea
is good but baits would have to be prepared well in advance the bait its self smells right but could have done with being
a lot firmer I would also have liked to see them much larger .the bait I have previewed and tested was described on ebay as
:ABOUT THE SIZE OF A DECENT SLICE OF BLACK PUDDING: you can see for yourself the size it is by the 4/0 hook I used in the
experiment
I have not tried to use the smaller size baits I got yet but will after the weekend and add to this review
I have emailed the surplier of this bait to ask for his tips on using it I will let you know what happens I would just like
to add this review is just my opinion and i will also add my comments after i have used it at sea .
I have this
morning had a great email from Oscar the supplier he has given me some good tips on preparation of the bait but he thought
the softness of the bait was because it was so fresh and is sending me out another batch to test which will be a few hours
old and much stiffer consistency I must say at this point the service and help I have recived from Oscar is great he is doing
all he can to help I also feel that the bait will catch fish the scent trail it will leave in the water will surely attract
fish and though it will take a little while to prepare it should do a good job. it is important to remember that when using
peeler crab it does take quite a while to prepare and get on to the hook and there is a lot of waste with crab . so this
bait scores heavily in this department no waste great smell no binding with elasticised cotton just hook it .great scent trail
. I am sure once we get used to using the bait it will be a winner with us all .
