Fitting a Scotty flush mount

How to fit a Scotty Flush mounted rod holder in pictures

For this project we have used  The liquidlogic Manta Ray 12ft fishing kayak  which we have on loan from System-X . At present, they do not come with flush mounted rod holders. So this small "How to" shows how simple they are to fit yourself. we have used a pair of scotty flush mounts .

1. Firstly I made a rough template of the hole required for positioning purposes

I then marked out with marker pen the location I preferred and found and marked the centre point.

I then drilled a pilot hole for the hole saw

With a 57mm hole saw I made a round hole

Putting the rod holder in the hole I tested for fit.

Then with the marker pen I marked where I needed to remove some more plastic for a snug fit.

I then found a file that was ideal for removing the unwanted plastic and cleaning up the edges

Perfect fit, I now drilled 3mm holes ready for the No6 x 1 1/2" stainless steel self tapers

Clean the whole area with methylated spirit, including the underside of the rod holder so the silicone will stick better.

it was decided that becouse the kayak we were fitting the scotty holders to had some very flat areas that we would not use the sponge gaskets which come suplied in the kit we wanted a tight flush fit so we Added plenty of good quality silicone to the underside of the rod holder and especially around the screw holes.

Screw down the mount with the self tapers, BUT NOT all the way

Clean off the silicone which squished out

Finish off with a hand screw driver

Finished article, ready for the next fishing adventure
