Fixing holes in kayaks is not as difficult as many people think
There is many reasons why we may need to fill a hole maybe we have moved a bracket and need to fill the old
holes to make the kayak watertight again.
Or maybe
a second user kayak needs a few old drill holes filled
Above you
can see the tools required a sharp cutting blade a craft knife a piece of waste plastic and some sort of heat i.e. small blow
lamp or candle
You can get a small piece of plastic to match your kayak by trimming a small piece from inside the hatch but
don’t go mad just trim enough to do the job
Firstly here are 2 drill holes I made for the job. They are typical of the sort of holes we find when a bracket
has been moved
The small piece of plastic is heated in this case I use a small blow lamp but a candle will do the job.
When the plastic is just about to become drippy press it in to the hole using the hobby knife.
As you can
see with these 2 filled holes allow more plastic than you need to fill the holes you need to make a small amount of overfill
in the holes
After allowing 5 mins to completely cool Using the sharp cutting blade cut of the excess plastic flush as possible
with the surrounding area.
This photo
shows the 2 holes now filled and watertight the slight difference in colour is because I used 2 different shades of yellow
plastic so you could see the filled holes.
Lastly using the small blow lamp for about 10 seconds I gently heat the area surrounding and hole to seal any
loose bits from my trimming.
